After weeks of hard work, training and building, the ladies 1s have taken home their first win of the season!
The ladies pushed hard from the first whistle, with superstar midfielders Phoebe, Annie and Katie moving the ball up the pitch and giving the forward line the opportunity to win a short corner. Sammie danced through defenders and made a strong strike into the back of the net which was unfortunately disallowed. The team didn’t let their heads drop. Later in the half, Em put the score 1-0 with a smart short corner strike directly through the keepers legs and into the back of the net.
The second half saw the Ladies 1s start with just as much grit and determination as the first half. Solid defensive work from Zoe and Pat kept the ball out of our D and created lots of opportunities for team to move as a unit and keep the attacking threat present. Clever play from Megan meant that several short corners were won, leading to a quick-thinking goal from Lia which put the 1s in a strong position.
Oxford university didn’t give up in their attack, but they were denied many goal scoring opportunities by Lynds, with Verity, Abbie and Lou moving up the pitch and finding the space to keep the attacking threat looming over the opposition. When the ladies 1s gave away a short corner, Isla used a quick recovery of the ball to burst down the pitch and pass into space with Louise, who fed the ball into the D for Em to defeat the keeper and make a backhand strike putting the Ladies 1s into a strong 3-0 lead. Oxford University kept fighting to the end, and put themselves on the scoreboards with a few minutes to go. The 1s kept cool heads and possession of the ball as the clock ticked down, putting 3 points next to their name on the league table!
