Milton Keynes 2s entertained the unbeaten Harrow at Fortress Woughton on a wet and blustery afternoon in what promised to be an entertaining game.
Both teams started cautiously, happy to keep possession around the back and build themselves into the game. MK were in no mood to muck around this week, quickly upping the tempo to earn the first short corner of the game following good work down the right hand channel from Dave Breuilly. After leaving it late last week, Jonny Wyatt carried on where he left off finishing with aplomb on what would turn out to be a fruitful afternoon for the centre forward.
The midfield duo of Tom Johnson and Toby King caused trouble all day, winning the ball high up the pitch and forcing several short corners, but unfortunately MK unable to convert any to build on their early lead. Tenacious work from Declan Lygo-Baker & Jonny upfront again forced turnover ball with several searching balls played across the D, with one just evading the despairing dive of skipper Dave McMillan at the back post.
With Harrow then coming more into the game, the back line of Grant Webster, Sam Bushell and Jack Zoers-Benstead were kept on their toes against the leagues top two scorers, but left them little space snuffing out most chances early doors. On the odd occasion they were breached Sam Spencer was there to keep the Harrow forwards goalless. After more pressure from MK, with good work from Grant, Sam and Stuart Bradley out the back to help get MK moving up the field, eventually the Harrow pressure told and they forced an equalizer.
This spurred MK to end the half on a high, with great work from Declan to keep the ball in play from what looked like a lost cause, before a well-weighted pull back to the awaiting Dan Judkowski to finished first time through the keepers legs to bag his first of the season.
The half time talk was to keep doing more of the same, with little pieces to work on to help lift the performance to the next level, and MK took his to heart as they started the half. The forwards carried on the tireless work in the press, making it hard for the opposition to work the ball out the back, with James Evans and Mark Sibson able to pick up the loose balls in the centre of the park and keep MK on the front foot.
The MK pressure told with more short corners won, but no luck in gaining the two goal cushion. Eventually the 3rd goal came through open play with Jonny picking the ball up in the D and finishing off for his second of the game.
As the rain started to pour down drenching all those on the pitch, everyone carried on manfully, with the exception of Toby who decided it looked much drier in the dugout, and a shift shoulder charge later achieved his objective with a green card. Despite the numerical disadvantage MK kept pushing forward through wing backs Ryan Gawley and Stuart, but MK unable to find the killer touch in front of goal.
Once back to a full complement MK pushed on looking for a 4th and thought they’d found it. Bushy went on a typical driving run out of defence, picking out Dan to drive in from the right and pick out Dave Breuilly at the back post, only to watch on as the Harrow keeper flung himself full length to keep out the goal bound effort.
MK saved the best until last. First a lovely flowing team goal which left the fans purring on the side-lines. Grant won the ball at the back and quickly fed the posting up Mac in the middle of the park. He slipped the ball to James who was overlapping down the right and released Dave running into the channel. He found the unmarked Jonny in the middle of the D who calmly rounded the onrushing keeper to complete his thoroughly deserved hat-trick. Second, an outrageous bit of skill from Sibo, who with 4 Harrow players closing in, turned on a sixpence and left them all trailing in his wake as MK looked for a 5th goal.
Harrow managed to get a late goal back from a short corner to try and add a bit of late tension to the game, but MK were able to see out the game for a well earned 4-2, leaving them flying high at the top of the table with as many wins this campaign as they managed in all of last year.
Man of the match: Jonny Wyatt – Heartbeat of MKs attacking play and hat-trick hero
Dick of the day: David Emery – Dodgy accountancy and ditching the team for Alton Towers; Dave Breuilly – Back post miss
