Milton Keynes travelled away to Staines on a blustery afternoon looking to carry on their strong early season form.
The visitors started brightly with Toby King and Declan Lygo-Baker looking to make inroads into the Staines defence and winning a short corner which was well saved by the Staines keeper. After that Staines grew more into the game with confident play round the back helping them to create several chances up front, but Sam Spencer was up to the task keeping the score at 0-0 including one superb point blank save with his outstretched leg with his body weight going the wrong way.
The MK defence continued to remain firm, with Grant Webster and Stuart Bradley keeping the Staines forward line at bay, but struggled to carve out any clear cut chances as the impressive Staines defence continued their good work. The one time MK managed to work the ball into what they thought was a goal scoring opportunity, the lively Tom Johnson managed to put the defender in the net rather than the ball, earning himself a green card for his efforts.
Right at the end of the first half MK thought they had a golden opportunity to take the lead. A typically searching Sam Bushell ball out the back found James Evans in the middle of the park who carried the ball toward the opposition D. As the pass was played to Dec on the by-line to square across goal for simple tap in, the clock struck 35 minutes and the umpires blew for half time denying MK the chance to score / sparing the blushes of the waiting forwards!
The second half continued in much the same vein with both defences on top. Eventually pressure from Staines resulted in an unmarked man putting the ball past Sam to leave MK 1 -0 down. After this the game opened up a bit more with the returning Ben Mcilwaine and Toby combining to set Dave Breuilly free on the right to outpace his marker and win MK a short corner. After several earlier efforts Jonny Wyatt made the short corner count to bring the game back level.
As the wind blew stronger, the MK wing backs of David Emery, Jack Zoers-Benstead Ryan Gawley continued to look for opportunities down the flanks, with their Staines counter parts doing likewise with Sam forced into several more saves to keep the game at 1-1.
The pivotal moment of the match came in the dying two minutes of the game. Typically tenacious work from Dave McMillan won a free hit on the edge of the D, which was quickly taken resulting in a short corner. Up stepped Jonny Wyatt to steal the headlines, rocketing a flick between postman and bar to give the visitors the lead, before posing in the box for the cameras. MK saw the out the final minute of the game to keep on winning ways.
Next up for MK a home clash again fellow front runners Harrow in what promises to be an entertaining game.
