Table toppers too good for MK

The MK Mens 2’s set off to Bisham Abbey to play Wycombe. Well, everyone except Ollie who was patiently waiting for Dan to arrive at the meet (20 minutes late?). The cars went their separate ways, the team’s trust in a convoy completely destroyed a fortnight before.
On the cross country route, the talk somehow got onto insurance; our resident expert Toby King giving value estimates on how much each body part could be worth if involved in an accident. Some teams use the journey to get their mind on the game, our car used the time to price up what body parts we could live without and what we could buy with the insurance money…

Despite picking the ice bath changing room and having a decent warm up, the action started slowly after push back, both teams sizing each other up in the opening exchanges. Milton Keynes enjoyed slightly more of the possession, Wycombe were well drilled and soaked up the pressure, attempting quick transfers around the back and breaking on the counter. They were successful in this approach, winning a number of short corners which were kept out by good goalkeeping from Nick and the post men Gav and Kingy being on form.

Milton Keynes had a couple of good opportunities from open play transferring high up and running directly at the Wycombe back line, but failed to convert or upgrade when in key positions. Just on the whistle of half time, a Wycombe player reacting quickly to a foul, charged into the D and scored on the reverse into the far corner. MK 1-0 down.

Team talk rallying the boys, who were all impacted by the timing of conceding. The team consensus was that we needed to take the game to Wycombe and up the intensity in the 50/50s.

Heading out for the 2nd half, MK did up the intensity but played into the hands of the Wycombe game plan, being caught in possession running into congestion and again failing to upgrade or convert our opportunities. Unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for Wycombe who did convert their 2nd half chances, broke at speed and forced Nick into some more good saves.

Final score Wycombe 5-0 Milton Keynes… Individually we didn’t play as badly as the score line may suggest, but it was a sharp reminder that we need to play our game, not the oppositions.

Victory for Wycombe sent them top of MBBO regional 1. MK 2s turn their attention to next weekend’s home game vs Newbury & Thatcham.

Honourable mention of the only card of the game, Sam Bushell’s green card for the first mis-challenge after the umpire’s final warning. Not enough for a DoD majority vote on its own, but staying in the bin when the umpire waves you back on wasn’t his finest moment.

Squad: Nick G, James, Gav, Carl, Ollie, Bushey, Sam, Toby, Kingy, Dan, Dave, Callum, Kav, Lewis
