MK move top after chilly home win

Despite the country freezing overnight, MK 2s welcomed Wokingham 1s for the first league game of 2016. While Wokingham were bottom of the league, they very nearly came away from the reverse fixture with a draw; MK knew they needed to be quick out of the blocks and not carry any rust from the winter break.

While MK went straight into their normal pre-game warm up routines, Wokingham had a different warm up planned… their ‘throwback to the late 80’s’ boom box could be heard blaring 00’s dance music, the likes that would be well at home at Vodka Revs.

Game began and MK were finding their feet on a hard surface within the first five minutes, but started getting on top of the game and forced a series of short corners making the keeper work. On the third consecutive short, Kav aiming low and the keeper saved – but it came back to Kav who reacted fastest to put the ball into the net, 1-0.

Continued pressure from MK ensued with several attempts coming close but without adding to the score, Wokingham having little success making it into the final third. The half changed though when Paul King got a green card for breaking up play, a harsh decision, but this was upgraded to a yellow when he challenged the decision, disagreeing vocally…

MK were now unsettled, with Wokingham controlling possession and MK losing some of the composure that they had carried in controlling the first 25 minutes. The Wokingham players could not make possession count, winning only one short corner and opting to transfer it around the back a lot more than necessary given their 1 man advantage. MK held strong though, and when back to 11 immediately looked the stronger team again just before half time.

Half time, 1-0 up and urged to add to the score, MK came out ready to press with intensity, looking to pick off any loose balls, did not have to wait long. The inside forwards Pete and Lewis both capitalising on hopeful Wokingham passes deep in defensive territory and forcing a short corner. Kav was able to find the far corner from a low drag, 2-0. The streak continues for the league’s top scorer.
In quick succession, keeping up the intensity and pressing play, Lewis intercepted and broke down the right, finding Russ who was not going to miss from three yards out. 3-0 and only 5 minutes into the second half.

Again it would be a yellow which would halt MK’s progress, a crafty winger moving down the left was mowed down by a double footed slide tackle from Lewis. The winger never saw it coming! Lewis, being right next to the dugouts, accepted the yellow before it was even produced and MK were back down to 10.

The final goal of the game was to come from JV, figuring the keeper had made some pretty good saves during the game when the ball was flicked or hit cleanly, decided to test him with a bobble. The keeper failed the test miserably, and MK wrapped up a solid victory, withstanding some late pressure from a final short corner for Wokingham.

4-0 and job done with a rare clean sheet, MK 2s go top as Aylesbury did not play. Next week will see MK 2s pitted against Aylesbury 1s away in a top of the table clash...
