A spirited performance against strong opposition in Newbury & Thatcham unfortunately went unrewarded for the Mens 3s. Newbury pressed hard from the off, and though they had the most of the play in the first half, MK took the lead through Russell Brazier's short corner strike. The lead didn't last too long , however, as a Newbury breakaway ended up with an attempted clearance falling to one of their players to slot home. Newbury pressured MK for the rest of the half but good goalkeeping from Sam Jackson kept the score at 1-1 at half-time.
The beginning of the second half ended up making the difference as Newbury came out strong and rushed into a 4-1 lead. Heads began to go down, but the ever-keen Will Luther raised hope with a short corner flick towards the near post to make it 4-2. More MK pressure came through again shortly after, resulting in a pentaly flick that Will Luther put away to make it 4-3. Unfortunately, MK couldn't quite the breakout to earn a point at the end of the game, but an encouraging performance against a team expected to challenge for the league this season.
MoM: Sam Jackson, for keeping the side in the game with a strong goalkeeping performance
DoD: Corey Jamieson, who tested out the new 2-minute suspension rule with the first green card of the league season.
